Memory

Writing

Here is a peom by Scott Poole that started me thinking about memory and its relative merits and demerits.

The Bodies We Used to Have

I’m looking the bodies we used to have
in the framed pictures
hanging from the small nails
hammered in our current walls.

I can feel paper doll cutouts
of these bodies spread out
on the red floor of my heart.

There they lie and stir
and are occasionally swept
by a valve or a regret
down the veins
to look for a face to match.

When one of my cutouts
finds your true face
that is when
this old heart skips,

letting me know
all my cells
have again agreed
that I love you.
